The purpose of this program is to prepare students for employment as a Control Tower Operator. This course offers a cohesive, interactive learning environment through the challenging, fast-paced atmosphere of Air Traffic Control. This course aims to educate and prepare students with no prior training or experience to obtain their Control Tower Operator (CTO) certificate. We also accept experienced controllers that did not obtain a CTO. This course provides hands-on training at a live tower to prepare students for a challenging and in-demand career.

This program is a planned sequence of instruction consisting of 16 weeks/4 months of classroom and simulation instruction in technical basics followed by 24 weeks /6 months of classroom and in-the-field training combined with live
airport training, resulting in earning the Control Tower Operator certification by students who meet the required qualifications.

Laboratory Activities

Laboratory activities are an integral part of this program. The instructional processes, tools and materials used in this laboratory are similar to those used in industry.

Occupational Completion Points (OCPs)

This program is a planned sequence of instruction consisting of one Occupational Completion Point. OCPs provide a student with early completion training options linked to employment opportunities established by the Florida Department of Education based on the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) system and accepted industry titles.

Admission Requirements

This program is available for adult students who are 18 years of age or older, who are interested in Technical College education for employment purposes and/or continuing their education at a postsecondary education institution. Students are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis following a Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment Systems (CASAS) assessment, if applicable, and an interview with a Counselor at Traviss. Students must be able to attend school regularly and to participate satisfactorily in the activities of this program. Students are required to pass a Class II Flight Physical, drug screen, and criminal background check.

Licensure/Certification

After successfully completing this program, students who meet the required qualifications will be prepared to earn the Control Tower Operator certification issued by the Federal Aviation Administration.
